Gill Residence
1,600 sf new residence
The Gill House is located in an urban West Charlotte neighborhood on a partially-wooded infill lot. Located among a mix of 1930s bungalows and brick and concrete block commercial buildings, this house is conceived as an “urban barn.” The project has a modest budget, so the house is extremely compact and is designed on a 12’-0” x 16’-0” grid to avoid material waste. The interior and exterior employ simple finishes including plywood floors, exposed ductwork, 4’-0” x 8’- 0” Hardi-panel siding, and a galvanized corrugated metal roof. The narrow dimension of the house allows significant cross-ventilation and deep overhangs protect the interior from unwanted heat gain.
